This Cinnamon Roll-inspired French Toast is the perfect breakfast (or dessert) when you’re craving cinnamon rolls but don’t wanna spend more than ten minutes in the kitchen. Bonus points: It’s made with the simplest ingredients and is easy enough for a cooking novice!

If you know me, you know that I love cinnamon rolls and I love making cinnamon roll-inspired desserts. I mean, it’s truly the best dessert ever created, so why shouldn’t I create more like it?

If you’re wondering, here are some of the cinnamon roll-inspired recipes I have made (so far).

And of course, I have also made REAL cinnamon rolls, and trust me, they taste better than any store-bought cinnamon roll you have tried. You can make them at home too with the help of my Cinnamon Roll guide.

So one fine morning I was craving a cinnamon roll but of course, I was lazy. So I thought, how can I make something that will satisfy my cinnamon roll craving quickly? That’s when it clicked me – Cinnamon Roll French Toast!

It’s quick and simple and literally takes 15 minutes to make, what could be better?

The recipe is super simple, all you need to make is the simple cinnamon butter filling and the French Toast batter (or custard). No fancy equipment required! Let me show you how to make it.

Cinnamon Butter Filling

The cinnamon butter filling is basically the same thing as a regular cinnamon roll filling, except that it’s turned into a stable paste so that it does not melt away while being cooked. It’s made with only five ingredients – softened butter, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt.

To make the cinnamon filling, place all the ingredients in a bowl and mix with a spatula until everything is combined and you have a thick paste-like consistency.

Make sure the butter is softened at room temperature, not melted, to get the perfect consistency.

French Toast Custard

I don’t there there is any other recipe that’s as simple as the custard for French Toast. Just add the ingredients – eggs, milk, brown sugar, and vanilla, in a bowl and whisk until combined.

I used two slices of simple white sandwich bread to make the French Toast, but you can also use a thick slice of brioche and pipe the filling in between the slice, similar to the method I use for my Creme Brûlée French Toast, if you are feeling fancy.

I find this method simpler and more accessible, but you do you!

To assemble, spread a thick (and I mean THICK) layer of the cinnamon butter on one of the slices, then place the other slice on top and press it down gently to make sure that both slices are stuck together.

Now heat the pan on medium-low flame and add the ghee or butter. While that heats, place the sandwich into the egg custard and soak it for a minute on both sides. Don’t soak it for too long or the bread will fall apart.

Now place the soaked bread sandwich into the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes on both sides until golden brown. Top it with the icing sugar glaze and enjoy hot.

Simple, right? Perfect for times when you’re craving something delicious but don’t wanna spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Ready to make the tastiest French Toast breakfast? Let’s go!

PS: I always measure ingredients in grams, never in cups. Using a measuring scale is the only way to bake accurately. Cups are unreliable and can give different measurements, so I suggest you buy a measuring scale before you start baking! If you can’t get your hands on one, you can use the online tools for converting grams into cups; however, I do not guarantee their accuracy.

75 grams butter, 65 grams packed brown sugar, 8 grams all-purpose flour, 10 grams cinnamon
  • Make the French toast custard: In a bowl, mix all the ingredients (except for the bread and butter) with a hand whisk until well combined – eggs, milk, brown sugar, and vanilla.
2 eggs, 100 ml full-fat milk, 50 grams brown sugar, 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • Assemble: Spread a thick layer of the cinnamon butter on two bread slices and top each with a plain bread slice, pushing down gently to seal.
    4 slices white sandwich bread

    50 grams ghee or butter
  • Place the soaked bread sandwich on the pan and cook on both sides on medium heat until golden brown.
  • Make the icing sugar glaze: mix the icing sugar and warm milk until you have a thick glaze-like consistency. If the glaze is too thin, add more icing sugar until you reach your desired consistency.
30 grams icing sugar, 10 ml warm milk
  • Pour the glaze on top of the French Toast and enjoy warm.

Notes

Make Ahead:
The cinnamon butter filling can be made a day before and stored in the fridge for up to a week.
Variation:
You can use a thick slice of brioche bread instead of two slices of sandwich bread. Make a slit at the bottom side of the slice to create a pocket and fill the filling inside it, then follow the same process as mentioned in the recipe.
